Shared Variables for Tracking Progress Across Multiple Goals
Currently, when you have a main goal with multiple sub-goals that track the same metric, you have to manually update the progress of each goal individually. This becomes tedious, especially when several goals depend on the same underlying value.
I would love to see a feature that allows users to create shared variables that can be linked to multiple goals, sub-goals, and potentially habits.
Instead of updating each goal separately, you would simply update the variable once, and every goal connected to that variable would automatically reflect the new value.
Example 1: Financial Goals
Imagine having the following goals:
Main goal: "Save €50,000 before 2028"
Sub-goal: "Save €10,000 before the end of 2026"
Sub-goal: "Save €30,000 before the end of 2027"
All three goals could reference the same variable, Savings, representing your current savings balance.
If you update Savings from €5,000 to €7,500, all three goals would automatically update their progress based on their respective targets.
Example 2: Weight Tracking
Imagine having a long-term goal of reaching 80 kg, with intermediate goals of reaching 110 kg, 100 kg, and 90 kg.
Rather than manually updating each goal whenever your weight changes, you could create a single variable called Weight and connect it to all related goals.
Each goal would then calculate its progress based on the current value of that variable.
Potential for Future Integrations
This could become particularly powerful with integrations such as Apple Health.
For example, once Apple Health integration is implemented, users could connect their Weight variable to Apple Health's body weight measurements.
Whenever a new weight measurement is recorded, the variable would automatically update, and every connected goal would reflect the change without requiring any manual input.
The same concept could apply to steps, distance walked, sleep duration, and other measurable metrics.
Additional Considerations
Ideally, variables would support different types of measurements, such as currency, weight, distance, time, or simple numerical values.
It would also be useful to distinguish between variables representing a current value (such as weight or savings balance) and variables representing an accumulated total over a period (such as steps walked this month or hours spent studying).
For accumulated variables, each goal could define its own tracking period while referencing the same underlying data.
Ultimately, the idea is to separate the data being tracked from the goals that depend on it.
This would make goal tracking significantly more flexible, reduce repetitive manual updates, and create a foundation for future integrations and automation.
